Janey Street Premieres My Side of Paradise in Nashville

by Rich and Laura Lynch

Critically-acclaimed singer/songwriter/musician Janey Street celebrated the release of her new album on Monday, July 11, 2016 at the City Winery in Nashville. To mark the occasion she was surrounded by family, friends, colleagues and her songwriting partners as My Side of Paradise made its debut in Music City.

Janey Street premiered a piece of My Side of Paradise in Music City.

Janey Street is a performer who launched her career in the 1980s with several hit singles and videos. The years that followed proved anticlimactic professionally, but she never gave up on her commitment to music. That dream drove her as she moved from New York City to L.A. to Nashville, writing music for movies and TV to living on odd jobs to pay the rent.

"I was doing songwriting workshops all over the country, mentoring for the Nashville Songwriters Association, painting houses, giving guitar lessons - whatever," she says. "I was just trying to survive," before continuing, "Music is and will always be my life - but I never thought I'd get the chance to make another record."

Then, in an instant, everything changed. Kirk Pasich had just launched Blue lan Records, with a mission to bring "expertise, perseverance, a long history of working with talent and an environment that fosters creativity on the artist's terms." As it happens, he was also a dedicated fan of Street's music, which inspired him to track her down and make her an offer she dared not refuse.

Street's triumphant set at the City Winery drew heavily from the new 13-track release. She soared on the R&B infused "Good Side" and climaxed just as it ended with the musical history of "Scat Like Ella". Janey is a solid songwriter and the collection of new material draws heavily from her own real-life stories that are elevated on a strong roots rock platform.

To help make things just a little more heavenly here on Earth Street presented this concert as a charitable fund-raiser to help support Gilda's Club Nashville - an affiliate of the Cancer Support Community that is dedicated to providing support, education and hope to all people impacted by cancer, including family members and friends of those diagnosed.

The legendary Janis Ian thrilled in a rare sighting in Nashville.

While Street herself has not personally battled cancer she did remark from the stage that she has lost a number of close family members and friends to the disease over the years and in the that time the services provided by Gilda's Club offered an outlet of comfort to her.

"I've known Jane since we were 12 and 13-years old respectively," Ian said upon taking the City Winery stage in the opening slot on this special night. "We were the only two people we knew that were listening to the Rolling Stones. Jane was my childhood. Jane was the one who kept me from getting too serious."

This introduction led to the serious sounding "Society's Child" that was her controversial breakthrough single from the album of the same name. "Bright Lights and Promises" featured a crisp and piercing blues break. Janis finished up her quick set with her most famous song "At Seventeen" and earned a well-earned standing ovation from the knowledgeable Nashville audience.

The evening got underway with a songwriter in the round presentation featuring acoustic numbers from some of Nashville's finest composers - Stephanie Bentley, Sam Tate, Lance Carpenter and Rob Wolf - who helped Street create her new offering.

The City Winery located at 609 Lafayette Street in Nashville is an up-scale venue with an innovative menu and wine list. They continue to host an eclectic blend of artists such as Janey Street. Up-coming events at the City Winery include Macy Gray, JD Souther, Berlin and more.

A songwriter's in the round with Janey's co-writers opened the show.
