Skinny Dennis Gets a Year Under Their Belt at Popular Music Venue in East Nashville

by Rich and Laura Lynch

Skinny Dennis in Nashville, Tennessee celebrated its one-year anniversary on Thursday, March 05, 2026 with a stacked musical line-up and a bar stocked full of extended happy hour specials to mark the special occasion. This local establishment located at 2635 Gallatin Pike serves the East Side of town with seven nights a week of live music. This pub has ample beer flowing along with signature cocktails and they have good food thanks to Sully's Smoke Shack. Sully's serves up flavorful New Orleans inspired BBQ. We tried the chicken quesadilla and the spicy brussels sprouts. Both looked and tasted great.

The original Skinny Dennis Bar was born in Brooklyn, New York in 2013. It quickly became a destination for its down-home dive bar aesthetic, fair prices and well-curated music programming. So, it made perfect sense to open a second location in Music City which they did in 2025.

Now who is Skinny Dennis? He was a bass player who worked with Guy Clark and several others in the LA country‑folk underground of the early '70s. His nickname is a reference to him having something called Marfan syndrome which contributed to the fact that although he was 6'11" he only weighed 135 pounds.

He was born in 1946 and was gone by 1975. But, the owners of Skinny Dennis were compelled to memorialize him with a venue utilizing his iconic and mythical status in order to channel that authentic, rootsy, West‑coast‑meets‑Texas country vibe he embodied during his brief yet impactful life.

Skinny Dennis - Cheers To One Year!

In most cases there is no cover charge at Skinny Dennis so music fans can enjoy quality entertainment for free. Bar and booth seating is available on a first come first served basis. They have a decent size dance floor plus some games. What we liked best was all the vintage items that adorn their walls. They have neon beer signs, beer cans, photos, posters, Tiffany lamps and a number of large items such as a cigarette machine - that if you grew around the time Skinny Dennis was playing bass - was a familiar sight.

On Thursday, musical talent for the 1 Year Anniversary Party was provided by Zephaniah OHora, Emily Nenni, Lillie Mae and Todd Day Wait and the venue had a large beer mug shaped birthday cake ready to break out to the tune of "Happy Birthday".

Skinny Dennis has the feel of a fun local bar with quality live music. For example, the legendary Jim Lauderdale is scheduled to play there in April - and Chris Scruggs of Marty Stuart's Fabulous Superlatives is also currently hosting a residency there. Just be aware that the venue encourages guests to use rideshare if planning on drinking alcohol plus there is limited on-site parking. However, there is public and paid parking options nearby. Skinny Dennis may have originated in New York, but it most definitely has an old-school Nashville vibe for both locals and tourists to enjoy.
