A Big Tent Pops Up on the East Bank as Do Portugal Circus Makes Its Nashville Debut

by Rich and Laura Lynch

For five generations the Portugal family has been entertaining and entrancing audiences with their traveling circus which will be in in Music City, Tennessee now through March 29, 2026. Their tent is set up at 111 North 1st Street in downtown Nashville - very near Nissan Stadium. We attended an afternoon show on Sunday of their opening weekend in town.

Do Portugal's big tent pops up on the East Bank as the troupe make their Nashville debut.

Do Portugal was founded in 1911 when the Portugal family started presenting their circus throughout Mexico. Over the years they expanded their tours. In 2019, they added locations in the United States with a promise to take attendees on a magical journey of laughter and pure amazement.

Do Portugal Circus showcases artists from around the world who have dedicated years to mastering their dazzling disciplines. Many of the performances are death-defying requiring not only commitment but courage. There were also lighter moments - as no circus is complete without a clown. Do Portugal's comedian was quite amusing as he interacted with the audience throughout the show while playing a variety of musical instruments.

Do Portugal also featured a dance troupe that performed during set changes. A number of their routines included magic. The most impressive trick of the day was a multiple costume change basically done in front of the crowd with the use of scarfs but the transitions were so quick that it was hard to comprehend how it had been done.

These ladies opened the show and would return later for a remarkable and revealing magic trick.

Do Portugal Circus 2026 production is billed as a breathtaking spectacle. Highlights were the Flying Careres performing acrobatics from their flying trapeze and The Washington Trapeze which was a one man show where the artist balanced on his head on the trapeze bar at great height while the Human Cannonball defied gravity with a blast.

We also enjoyed the juggler, the ribbon air dance and the handstand presentation of strength while the trampoline troupe presented stunts in the context of a basketball game. Perhaps the most exciting feat of the night was also the loudest one when two speeding motorcycles raced against each other inside the "Globe of Death".

To this day all shows are run by the Portugal family. Their goal is to pass down the circus tradition for generations to come. This circus covered a lot of ground in just under two hours. The GA seating (first-come-first serve) surrounded the one-ring circus but even the last row was not far from the action. As of this writing GA seating was $30 for adults & $20 for kids. Do Portugal is an affordable fun activity for all ages and there is still time to come see if for yourself now thru March 29, 2026 before they pack up and head to Houston next month.

There were death-defying acts like this performer who balanced on his head high above the ring.
