Cheekwood Springs Forward with Bold Plans and a Massive Replanting Push After the Storms
Although the temperatures have been fluctuating it is springtime at Cheekwood in Nashville, Tennessee as the tulips are in bloom. Cheekwood celebrates the season of rebirth with an annual festival of flowers. This years theme Red, White & Blooms honors America's upcoming 250th birthday with 250,000 red and white tulips mixed into patterns with purple-blue violas and hyacinths.
Cheekwood In Bloom runs through April 12, 2026 in Nashville. Depending on when you visit you may also see an array of dazzling daffodils. During the flower fest folks can enjoy the beautiful beds and so much more including the West Gardens with its large-scale sculptures or the grounds near the Historic Mansion. On weekends there will be live music and food trucks during Red, White & Blooms. The Historic Mansion is a worthwhile add-on as the stately former residence of the Cheek family showcases some of their impressive personal effects. The Mansion has permanent and rotating collections. We checked out the house during Red, White & Blooms and saw the Cowan Collection on loan from the Parthenon that featured American artists from the turn of the 20th century. Also of interest was the works of Karen LaMonte known for her ethereal sculptures crafted in glass and metal that explore the relationship of drapery, light and the absence of the female form. "Lost for Words" is a pop-infused graphic arts exhibition showcasing prints from Cheekwood's own collection that transform language into visual expressions.
This year's display features 250,000 bulbs and a patriotic theme! The East Garden is scenic and has an intricate miniature train set along with a storybook trail that is currently telling the tale of overcoming the impossible. Each month has signature flowers to be appreciated plus the walkways leading to the mansion are peaceful and pretty. The historic home is lovely as each room is painted in a distinctive color to compliment the decorative arts, furniture, paintings, silver and textiles that are part of the Cheek's collection. While the tulips are blooming our beloved Cheekwood has been facing some challenges of late but they are meeting them head on. Janaury's widespread ice event impacted much of the natural beauty at the estate and gardens. But, Cheekwood officials have announced a one-for-one replanting policy, promising to plant a new tree for every single tree lost during Winter Storm Fern.
Karen LaMonte's ethereal sculptures have taken up residence in the mansion. Also, last year it was announced that Cheekwood's 40-year agreement to use adjacent Metro Parks land for visitor overflow ends in 2027. To maintain its nearly 400,000 annual visitors without relying on external property, the institution is constructing its own on-site garage to handle parking demand, improve traffic flow in the neighboring residential areas, and support year-round programming. Plans for the $25 million, 750-space parking pavilion are currently posted at the main gate entrance to prove that even more big things will be in bloom at the 55-acre propery very soon. Cheekwood Estate & Gardens also hosts camps and horticulture workshops during the year. Visit now to enjoy Red, White & Blooms then return for special events or the scenic wonders of each of the four seasons with spring being one of the best.
