Nutrition Health Coach and Cooking Celebrity Simply Sherri Is Simply the Best

by Rich and Laura Lynch

Tina Turner once sang "you're the best, you're better than all the rest" and this could apply to Sherri Holzer - a food strategist, cooking instructor, and Integrative Nutrition Health Coach. In fact, one of Sherri's mottos is "your best, one meal at a time" building on the idea of making simple changes for better health in the areas of attitude, community, family, food and lifestyle. We learned this and a lot more at one of her cooking classes held July 20, 2023 in her West Nashville (TN) home.

Simply Sherri keeping it simple in West Nashville.

This experience was so much more than a tutorial. Fresh off of her latest appearance on "Today in Nashville" an enthusiastic Sherri warmly welcomed us into her home where we noticed the scent of fine food in the works. Holzer treats you like a friend rather than a student. Once everyone had arrived, she briefly shared her background and thanked her mother who is from Greece for raising her in that culture. Sherri's Mom and Husband were present to assist and gave the event a feeling of a family gathering.

Simply Sherri offers individual or a series of classes. If you sign up for a series you are likely to see some familiar faces. Each event has a theme such as Mediterranean With A Splash of Nash or Savor The Flavors Of Summer. On the 20th we enjoyed a seasonal fare. The appetizer was fresh vegetables, homemade hummus and chips. Our first lesson began with the chips. Sherri said that most commercial chips are made with a lot of processed ingredients that you can't even pronounce and thus should avoid. Instead she recommended brands that use wholesome ingredients. She would share more helpful tidbits like that throughout the evening along with what tools of the trade she uses in her own home.

Sherri has a zest for life which of course includes cooking. Her zeal was apparent as she walked us through the meal that we would soon be enjoying together. We were all given a handout of the recipes that listed the required items and the steps so we could follow along and cook this meal at home in the future. Folks were encouraged to ask questions and share their insights adding to the social atmosphere of the night.

On the menu tonight? Simply Sherri's Summer Series!

Guests were invited to the kitchen counter to assist. Sherri does some prep in advance such as pealing garlic and measuring out ingredients to keep things moving along. As the meal was being made Sherri advised folks to buy local. She also emphasized how important it is to read labels - the simpler the ingredients the better. She warned of misleading marketing tricks such as beef that says grass fed which is generally good. But, if you can dig deeper - find out if those bovines grazed outdoors as a healthier cow means a healthier end product. She is an advocate for learning how to make good choices.

Holzer's tasty appetizers were complimented by minty mojitos with mint freshly picked from Sherri's garden. The main course was chili-lime grilled flank steak paired with Mexican corn and cilantro-lime black beans. Affirming the idea of using seasonal items the dessert was peach pie served in jars with ice cream and pecans. The food and company were fabulous.

A cooking class with Simply Sherri is an educational, entertaining and delicious way to spend an evening while meeting new people. It is also likely that you will be seeing more of Sherri, her family and friends moving forward. In addition to conducting classes Sherri is a food consultant and soon to be author. Sherri's cookbook will combine her love of healthy food with her love of the sport pickleball. We cannot wait to see the positive energy that she has poured into this lifestyle book which is due out in August 2023.

Just as in pickleball - most of the action at Sherri's took place in her beautiful kitchen.
