ELVIS is EPIC at the Opry Mills IMAX in Nashville

by Rich and Laura Lynch

The acronym of Elvis Presley In Concert spells out EPIC which is also the appropriate title of the latest movie about Elvis. However, EPIC is not about someone impersonating "The King". Instead, this music documentary stars Presley himself telling his own deeply personal story through archival interviews paired with fantastic footage with the focal point being the beginning of his long-running concert stand in Nevada.

ELVIS was EPIC at the Opry Mills IMAX in Nashville.

Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 - August 16, 1977) was an actor and singer best known as the "The King" of rock and roll. Presley's peppy and provocative performance style, combined with a mix of influences across color lines during a transformative era in race relations gained him great success along with controversy. Today, Elvis is widely regarded as one of the most culturally significant figures of the 20th century.

EPIC is a captivating cinematic experience from visionary filmmaker Baz Luhrmann. It features a fit and trim Elvis rehearsing and commanding crowds in the early days of his Vegas residency. We had the pleasure of seeing an advance preview of EPIC in IMAX and we were amazed by how vibrant the colors and sounds were of concerts that were recorded over 50 years ago. The film captures Elvis at a pivotal and potent time in his career proving that Elvis really was an EPIC entertainer.

The documentary also touches upon The King's musical influences which started with the church and over time he would master ballads, R&B and of course rock. But, the three Grammy Awards that Elvis won in his lifetime were for gospel recordings. All these elements were showcased in EPIC with Elvis leading a sizable band and choir through the hits in a live setting where he truly excelled especially in the early days at the International in Las Vegas - a gig that lasted seven years.

Conversations with Elvis and concert clips flowed smoothly into each other making it seem like Elvis was talking to us. We join Presley at his Vegas rehearsals to see his human and humorous side along with a strong work ethic. In one clip Presley is reminding his talented team that each night there is a new audience. For many it may be the first time seeing the show - so, in other words - give them our best and EPIC showcases some of their best work with Elvis bringing so much energy to his performances.

The jumpsuits literally and figuratively weighed down The King as the 70's went on.

The only really troubling aspect of this engaging and amazing 96-minute documentary is that with the benefit of hindsight - the viewer knows all to well how this is all going to end. Following The King's 1968 televised comeback where he wore what became one of the most iconic looks in rock history - a black leather suit (jacket and matching pants) - Elvis was looking for a change. While the striking combo was sharp, tight, rebellious and intentionally evocative of his 1950's raw‑energy era it wasn't practical for the energetic shows he was planning for his casino concerts.

Elvis wanted freedom of movement to present karate‑influenced moves while on stage and traditional suits restricted him. So, the jumpsuit - originally inspired by martial‑arts gear, allowed him to make his dramatic gestures without splitting seams or losing structure during his active concerts. But, by the time of his death the image created by his bold and practical fashion choice would also ensnare him into a caricature of himself.

"I'm caught in a trap, I can't walk out," Elvis sings in "Suspicious Minds" as Elvis Presley In Concert nears its end - underscoring the sad truth that Vegas was where Presley donned the iconic, bedazzled jumpsuits that eventually became a trap of his own making. As the years went by, those suits weighed The King down both literally and figuratively, with some jewel‑adorned outfits topping seventy pounds and ironically restricting the very movements they were designed to showcase. Night after night, Elvis found himself performing twice daily as a character in a costume he no longer fit - metaphorically or physically.

Baz Luhrmann is an Australian director, producer and writer who is regarded by some as a contemporary example of an auteur for his approach to the composition, design, directing and music in his films. With EPIC, Baz promises an "Elvis Presley like never before". We thoroughly enjoyed the polished flow and friendly feel of EPIC that presented Elvis in a very personable, positive and professional light. Mark your calendars now to experience EPIC for yourselves. There will be an EPIC one-week exclusive IMAX engagement starting on February 20th, 2026 and then it hits theaters on the 27th.

Elvis also sold an epic amount of records throughout his legendary career.
