Music City Roots Finally Digs In at New Harken Hall Home in Madison
After a lengthy hiatus Nashville's beloved Music City Roots returned to Harken Hall in Madison, Tennessee on November 26, 2025. The much-anticipated live performance starred Vince Gill, Rodney Crowell, Darrell Scott, Rob Ickes and The McCrary Sisters.
Music City Roots mades its long-awaited debut at Madison's Harken Hall in 2025. The Music City Roots show was our first time at Harken Hall. The venue is constructed of seasoned wood and on this occasion tastefully decorated for the holidays with trees, wreaths and white lights which enhanced the warm tones of the room. The floor had seating in front of the stage and the loft was a combination of couches and suites that had a small living room setup with bar stools by the rails for fans to relax and enjoy the show. Since the word harken is related to "listen" folks are encouraged to focus on the music and on the 26th the audience was very attentive and why wouldn't they be with such a quality lineup. Hosted by the legendary Jim Lauderdale, the program featured acclaimed writer and interviewer Barclay Randall alongside "Ranger Doug" (Douglas B. Green) of Riders in the Sky and The Time Jumpers. This launch concert was aired live on WMOT-Roots Radio. Jim kicked things off with a new song while stating it was great to be back.
The show closing Black Sheep Tequila Jam featured Vince Gill, Rodney Crowell and the evening's complete cast. The McCrary Sisters sing gospel that melds traditional with contemporary and incorporates their influences of classic soul, Americana, blues, rock and R&B music which was reflected in their opening slot with the highlight being a creative take on "Go Tell It On The Mountain". During their interview with Doug, they talked about their latest record Love Is The Only Key (2025) declaring that they wanted it to be positive in light of the negative times we are currently living in. Darrell Scott is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer and a well-respected Nashville session player and Rob Ickes is recognized as one of the most innovative Dobro players on the scene today. Together they were a dynamic duo at Music City Roots. They played "The Day Before Thanksgiving" - a powerful look at being thankful while questioning the true nature of the holiday and "In The Good Old Days (When Times Were Bad)" they touched upon the hardness of life while tipping their talented hats to Dolly Parton. While chatting with Doug, it was revealed that this was the first time that the two have played together live and they alluded to working together in the studio - so be on the lookout for that. Rodney Crowell is a songwriter's songwriter from Texas who is also a multi-Grammy Award-winning artist with fifteen number one hits. He too presented a number of compositions on the challenges of life countered by how thankful he was that Keith Urban covered "Making Memories of Us". During his set, Rodney presented a song that was inspired by a homeless person with lyrics so potent that we felt the cold and loneliness of that soul. In his interview he touched upon his long career and a new album and working with a number of greats like Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt and John Prine during his early days in Music City.
The very beautiful Harken Hall is ready to make history on the outskirts of Music City. Vince Gill is famous for his stellar songwriting, world-class guitar playing and warm, soaring tenor voice. On this night, he delivered the hits starting with "When Ever You Come Around" which he penned for his wife Amy Grant when they first met many years ago. Gill mentioned that "Go Rest High On That Mountain" was written for the passing of his brother but he was still thankful for that song. During his chat, Gill said how grateful he was to be a musician who has worked with over 1,000 artists in the past 50 years. Keeping with the Music City Roots tradition was the Black Sheep Tequila Jam which featured all the performers on stage and on this night they played "I'll Fly Away" to end the radio show on an historic and soaring note.
Jim Lauderdale, Vince Gill and Co., The McCrary Sisters along with Darrell Scott & Rob Ickes helped make this a night to remember in Madison.
