Still Soaring: The Eagles Deliver a Night of Timeless Magic in Nashville

by Rich and Laura Lynch

The Eagles have been enjoying an extraordinary late career renaissance, thanks in part to their extended run at the Sphere in Las Vegas. The Sphere is one of the most technologically advanced music venues in the world. Their Long Goodbye III tour has allowed fans across the country to experience the band's legacy closer to home. So, when a handful of select shows were announced outside of Nevada, fans in those lucky cities knew they were getting something special. On Saturday, May 9, 2026, Nashville, Tennessee, became one of those locations as the Eagles landed at FirstBank Stadium for a night steeped in harmony, heart and history.

The Eagles dived right into the iconic "Hotel California". The song and the 1976 album of the same name marked a defining milestone in the Eagles' career. It signaled their flight from country‑rock pioneers into sophisticated storytellers with a darker, more expansive sound. Don Henley, a founding member, lyricist, and the band's rhythmic anchor, delivered the lead vocal while drumming. Still an impressive feat all these years later. Henley's solo career also looms large in rock history, and later in the set he revisited that chapter with "The Boys of Summer", his 1984 hit that climbed the charts and became a generational anthem.

For the first stretch of the concert, the crowd stayed on their feet, singing along to "One of These Nights", "Already Gone" and more keeping the energy high while reminding everyone why the Eagles' catalog has become the soundtrack of so many people's youth. Eventually, Henley paused to greet the Nashville audience, noting that the band would be playing about two hours of music. He also gently encouraged fans to take their seats so those behind them could see - an acknowledgment of the band's core fan base of Baby Boomers and Gen Xers, many of whom prefer not to stand for an entire show these days.

Vince Gill - Nashville's own, and an Eagle in full flight has remained an important asset since joining the fold in 2017. His warm tenor and impeccable phrasing fits seamlessly into the group's signature harmonies. Gill sang lead on "Take It to the Limit", "Lyin' Eyes" and "New Kid in Town" with each one earning him enthusiastic applause from his hometown crowd. Gill's expressive guitar work adds another layer to a band already rich with instrumental talent. Vince is also a prolific songwriter with a storied solo career, which makes it all the more surprising that the Eagles have never released a studio album - or a lone single for that matter - featuring him. It feels like a missed opportunity. But, at the same time, the group's commitment to delivering the classics in polished, faithful form is part of what keeps them a top‑tier touring act. They honor the original arrangements while adding tasteful nuances and extended jams proving that sometimes you don't mess with what works.

Another highlight came from Timothy B. Schmit, with his performance of "I Can't Tell You Why", the silky 1980 hit he co‑wrote, was a masterclass in restraint and emotional clarity. Schmit's bass playing continues to be the quiet backbone of the Eagles' sound, securing the band with subtlety and finesse.

The presence of Deacon Frey who is the son of the late Glenn Frey adds emotional weight to the modern Eagles lineup. Deacon honors his father's legacy by delivering songs like "Take It Easy" and "Peaceful Easy Feeling" that resonates deeply with longtime fans. His voice carries echoes of Glenn's tone but with Deacon's own texture.

And then there is Joe Walsh whose voice may not be as smooth as Gill's or Schmit's, but whose personality and guitar heroics electrify every venue he steps into. Walsh's segment of the show was a high‑octane highlight, featuring "Life's Been Good", "Funk #49" and "Rocky Mountain Way" - all played with the patented swagger and humor that only Walsh can bring in a live setting.

By the time the final harmonies faded into the Nashville night, it was clear that the Eagles remain one of America's most beloved bands. Their performance was engaging, and filled with fan favorites proving that even after decades in the spotlight - they continue to soar.

Fans who arrived early were treated to a powerhouse opening set from the Tedeschi Trucks Band, who recently performed the national anthem at the 2026 Kentucky Derby. This blues‑rock ensemble, led by husband‑and‑wife duo Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, brought a full‑bodied sound thanks to backing vocalists, a horn section and the exceptional Gabe Dixon on keyboards. Dixon's rich and rhythmic touch added depth to the band's grooves and gave their improvisational sections a soulful backbone. Gabe has also penned a number of songs for the collective's recent rather prolific output.

Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks are both acclaimed guitarists in their own right. Susan with her blues‑infused grit and vocal power, Derek with his transcendent slide guitar mastery. Together, they complement each other beautifully, weaving lines that feel both spontaneous and deeply connected.

Their hour‑long set blended originals with inventive covers, including funky takes on Sly & The Family Stone and a stirring rendition of "With a Little Help From My Friends" in the Joe Cocker style. Extended jams gave each band member moments to shine, showcasing why this group remains one of the most respected touring acts in modern roots music. The Tedeschi Trucks Band is on the road for much of 2026 and they announced at their set's conclusion that they will be returning to Nashville to play for Live Nation's soon to be opened venue The Truth on October 16 and 17.
