Killer Queen Kills It in Nashville

by Rich and Laura Lynch

Queen is a British rock band that formed in the early 1970's. Their music runs the gamut from arena rock, pop to progressive. The group was fronted by the charismatic Freddie Mercury who sadly departed this world in 1991. Since then, Queen has carried on in various configurations. They have influenced countless others and they are one of the world's best-selling artists of all time. So, it is not that surprising that tribute bands have emerged. One of the best is Killer Queen who brought their high energy event to Marathon Music Works in Nashville, Tennessee on March 11, 2022.

As the story goes, the members of Killer Queen had missed their opportunity to see Freddie live so in 1993 they decided to stage their own show. Within a year, Killer Queen was regularly performing in London's West End attracting widespread media coverage. As time went by, they gained a strong following and are now one of the few Queen cover bands to have sold out some of the same arenas that Queen played at their peak.

It is a big bonus that lead singer Patrick Myers bears an extraordinary likeness to Freddie. Mr. Myers' stellar showmanship paired with a powerful 3 and 1/2 octave range allows him to emulate Mercury with ease. The rest of Killer Queen are musical experts who aptly handle the challenging catalogue of Queen while adding important backing vocals. Like Patrick, they too somewhat resemble their counterparts which enhances their overall impact.

Patrick Myers was the spitting image of the beloved Queen fontman.

Like the originals, Killer Queen charmed the crowd from the first song to the last as they encouraged fans to clap, fist pump, jump and sing along. Lighting and smoke were also utilized to polish their passionate performance. Myers was on the move most of the show and only slowed down to take a seat at the piano. Patrick can also play guitar. He added acoustic to the catchy "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". Killer Queen complimented that Elvis influenced tune with "Jailhouse Rock".

"Another One Bites The Dust" started as a sing-along before flowing into the more familiar disco format then back to a call and response - an effective technique used quite a bit during Killer Queen's engaging two hour set. Drum and guitar solos were also part of the fun and gave Patrick time to switch out his Freddie inspired outfits a few times during the night.

"I Want It All" had some magical moments that were all the more amazing due to the physicality of the presentation. "Tie Your Mother Down" was another example as Patrick gestured with the mic just as Freddie use to do. Other highlights included a manic "Stone Cold Crazy", a moving "Somebody To Love" and "Radio Gaga" which was riveting as bright lights blinked out the words Gaga.

The rest of the band also bore a striking resemblance to the musicians they portrayed.

Queen is in a class by themselves and Killer Queen brings that experience to people who were there and to those who were not even born when Mercury ascended to the stars. Their encore was a pageantry starting with "Bohemian Rhapsody" flowing into a rousing "We Will Rock You" paired with a winning "We Are The Champions" to end the concert on a victorious note. Killer Queen killed it in Nashville and they still have plenty more places to conquer as they tour the states and Europe in 2022.

Killer Queen's host - Marathon Music Works located at 1402 Clinton Street in Nashville, TN is a multipurpose event venue. They have a standing room capacity of 1,800 and over 14,000 sq. ft., Marathon can entertain parties of up to 600 in formal banquet seating, 750 in a theater arrangement, and 900 in cocktail functions. Much of their space is used for concerts. Upcoming shows include Oliver, Tree, Animal Collective, Epik High, Relient K and more.

Killer Queen promised to be back after drawing a fine crowd on a snowy night in Nash.
