More Fine Fare with Jason Minton at the Kitchen Downtown

by Rich and Laura Lynch

We have been following Jason Minton for many years and he remains one of our top independent artists of all-time. Jason grew up in Franklin, Tennessee, but despite the draw of country music in the region Minton favored English new wave bands such as Crowded House and Squeeze. Those influences can be heard in his songs - some of which were presented at the Kitchen Downtown in Nashville at a live show on August 27, 2021. This was the second time in a month that his group has performed at this fine eatery.

On Friday, Jason was backed by his capable band and together they presented an engaging evening of covers mixed in with Minton's originals. One of our favorites penned by Jason is a song called "Promise" a track that sounds like it could have been a hit for Squeeze. The soon to be released "Don't Hesitate" was another tune that showcased Jason's song craft and gave the band a bit of room to stretch.

Minton has always been very open and enthusiastic about his love for Squeeze, especially the Paul Carrack era. That singer has one of the most unique careers in music best known for his work on "Tempted" and with the bands Ace and Mike & The Mechanics. Jason played another one of his originals on this night that is a deep reflection on the brevity of life and everyone's impending mortality called "Here With You". Perhaps it borrows its theme from Mike's "The Living Years" but it culminates with one of the best song name-checks in recorded music history. You'll have to listen to the video below to hear that one for yourself!

The Jason Minton Band aptly presented standards such as "Unchain My Heart", Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" and Bad Company's "Run With The Pack" with Jason handling the vocals not an easy thing to do with a song sung by one of the greatest singers ever Paul Rodgers. They followed that with a fun version of "Stuck In The Middle With You". If you would like to see Jason - he has a monthly gig at Kimbro's in Franklin where The Jason Minton Band plays extended explorations of classic covers along with his own compelling compositions.

The food at the Kitchen Downtown is tasty and wholesome. Rich had the appetizing turkey club while Laura thoroughly enjoyed the vegi-wrap. Nick is the proprietor and he is himself a musician who plays a regular Thursday night gig at the restaurant that is located right next to The Arcade on the street formerly known as 5th Avenue. His team includes local legend Guthrie Trapp and sometimes special guests drop in to jam - so check it out.

If you need any more convincing to visit the Kitchen Downtown the reviews are in with quotes such as - Great food! / Incredible music / Top notch staff! / Delish great service / The food was yummy! / cool ambiance / Great live music / Awesome food and prices! / This place is amazing!
