The Christmas Heartbeat Debuts With a Hearty Holiday Pulse in Nashville

by Rich and Laura Lynch

They might as well slap a Hallmark‑approved label on the Batman Building because for the second year in a row we had the honor of attending a Christmas movie premiere in Music City that was filmed in and around the Nashville region. This time it was The Christmas Heartbeat, a homegrown holiday rom‑com with real emotional weight, screeing at the Regal Opry Mills complex on Thursday, October 15, 2026. The red carpet was packed with cast members, producers, Nashville creatives and a community that has increasingly become the South's most unexpected hub for yuletide cinema.

MCN is On Location at the premier screening of The Christmas Heartbeat in Nashville.

The film, inspired by the true cardiac‑arrest survival story of Tennessee advocate Carrie Romero, follows Julia Winters - played with luminous vulnerability by Brittany Curran - New York food critic whose life is derailed by a sudden cardiac arrest. Forced to slow down, she returns to her Tennessee hometown, where Christmas never fades and old wounds still linger. Director Lance Smith, the former CMT personality who has become one of Nashville's most promising filmmakers, told me the night felt like a full‑circle moment. "I grew up here. To shoot a film in Tennessee after all these years. It's a dream come true," he told MCN's Rockin' Rich Lynch in a joyous pre-screeing interview on the red carpet set-up at Opry Mills.

The cast echoed that sentiment all night. Curran lit up when asked what she loved most about filming in Nashville. She spoke about the city's support for the arts, the generosity of locals, and the surreal experience of shooting Christmas scenes in the blistering July heat. "We felt so welcomed," she said. "Even the people who let us film on their private farm made us feel like family".

The Nashville‑shot production wasn't just a festive rom‑com - it carried a deeper purpose. Romero's real‑life advocacy for cardiac‑arrest awareness and AED access is woven directly into the film's DNA. On the carpet, she spoke with quiet emotion about what it meant to tell her story in the city where she survived. "My origin story started here," she said. "To film this in the place where I began to thrive again... it's extremely meaningful". Her voice caught when she described celebrating early Christmases with her husband and later their children - moments she once feared she'd never live to see.

The supporting cast added their own Nashville‑flavored reflections. Stephen Mason - the Jars of Clay guitarist who plays Julia's late father in the film - talked about rediscovering parts of town he hadn't visited in years, calling the greater Nashville area "beautiful, especially out in the country". Rachael Thompson who portrays Julia's sister Lisa in the film, said the best part was being surrounded by the city's creative energy - "people singing on set everywhere", she recalled. Co-writer Chuck Fusca admitted the experience made him want to move to Nashville outright. "Everybody's so friendly", he said. "It's a great city to shoot a movie in".

Christmas memories flowed freely on the carpet, each one polished into a small gem. Mason remembered the Lego castle he received as a kid - a moment of pure childhood magic. Curran shared a story about her father building an elaborate snow fort in their Cape Cod yard, complete with hallways and rooms. Thompson recalled her father playing piano while the family sang together. Romero spoke of her first Christmas with her husband, and later the joy of celebrating with children she once feared her heart condition would prevent her from having. These weren't just anecdotes - they were reminders of why holiday films resonate so deeply.

According to Carrie Romero - the film is packed with Easter eggs. The one that jumps off the screen was Beverly D’Angelo's station‑wagon gag when she drove off scene in a wood paneled vehicle straight out of her Vacation era with Chevy Chase that left the crowd howling. Mick Foley - the WWE Hall of Famer and real‑life Christmas superfan - brings unexpected warmth as Moose, the self‑taught chef and right‑hand man. Foley told the media in advance of the screeing that appearing in a Christmas movie was a lifelong dream. Watching him on screen, you believe it.

As the evening wound down, Romero took the stage for closing remarks that were as heartfelt as the film itself. She thanked the cast, crew, supporters, and the Nashville community that embraced her story. But she made a point to single out the caterer who fed the team throughout the 16‑day shoot - a gesture that perfectly captured the film's spirit. Nadia Simmons and her Healthy Soul Catering Company also provided a massive spread of Christmas desserts laid out for attendees, a sugary finale that felt like a love letter to everyone who helped bring The Christmas Heartbeat to life.

In the end, the premiere wasn't just a celebration of a movie - it was a celebration of Nashville’s growing identity as a storytelling capital, of community, of resilience, and of the beating heart at the center of Romero's journey. The Christmas Heartbeat isn’t just a holiday film. It's a reminder that healing, love, and second chances can arrive when you least expect them - sometimes wrapped in twinkle lights, sometimes in a packed theater at Opry Mills, and sometimes in the city that refuses to stop believing in its own magic.
