Johnny Cash Museum Unveils Expansive New Wing Honoring the Man in Black's Enduring Legacy
Tuesday, October 13, 2026 was declared "Johnny Cash Museum Day" by Tennessee Governor Bill just as a portion of 3rd Avenue South, from Demonbreun Street to Broadway was renamed to receive the honorary designation of "Johnny Cash Way". All of this activity coincided with the opening of a new wing of the museum that is dedicated to the "Ring Of Fire" singer featuring a whole second floor of additional exhibits and one-of-a-kind items related to Cash's multi-decade long career.
Founder Bill Miller enthusiastically shares the news about the new wing at the Johnny Cash Museum. During his remarks at the expansion's unveiling, museum founder Bill Miller shared that their visitors are all ages meaning that Johnny's music is reaching the next generation. He gave thanks to the Cash family - many of whom were on hand for the opening night celebration - for trusting him with this work. Miller said Cash's relatives wanted the second floor to have the feeling of being in Johnny and June's home. Thus, it has a warmth even with all the modern tools that makes it interactive and wholly engaging. Born in 1932, Johnny Cash would become one of the most influential recording artists of all time. His music crossed the boundaries of blues, country, gospel and rock. His honors included induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame (1980), the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1992), and numerous Grammy Awards, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Cash died in Nashville, Tennessee in 2003, but his songs continue to resonate because of their themes of challenges, compassion, faith, hope, humor and redemption.
Carlene Carter and Kathy Cash shared some thoughts about their famous father in Nashville. The Johnny Cash Museum opened in 2013 and is dedicated to celebrating and preserving the legacy of The Man In Black. Located in the heart of downtown Nashville, the museum houses an extensive collection of handwritten lyrics, instruments, memorabilia, personal items, stage costumes and much more along with video exhibits featuring interviews and performances. The Johnny Cash Museum has been voted America's #1 Music Museum by USA TODAY readers four years in a row and has become one of Nashville's most recognized cultural attractions. It has the world's most comprehensive collection of Cash artifacts where visitors can follow his life story chronologically, from his Arkansas childhood through his rise to fame, his marriage to June Carter Cash and his late-career renaissance. We had the pleasure of visiting the new section of The Johnny Cash Museum on the 13th and were impressed with the state-of-the-art displays such as maps showing that Johnny had really "been everywhere, man". We viewed what a typical Cash tour rider consisted of back in the day. We also got a kick out of the depiction of a train with seats that rumbled like we were actually riding the rails. The locomotive was a prime example of the thoughtful details that are part of the overall impact of the new elements of this museum.
John Carter Cash was present via the video display wall. There were a number of interactive feature including Cash trivia and games displayed on a large video table for matching albums or choosing photos from various decades in the Cash timeline - all that could be moved and made bigger or smaller with the wave of a finger. In addition to black suits there were some of June's gowns along with her personal items. Both Cash are Carter were avid collectors and enjoyed pieces that had stories or had sentimental meaning and there are quite a lot of them to see at the Johnny Cash Museum. In addition to all the excitement generated by the opening‑night celebration - where dozens of champagne bottles were popped to serve the hundreds of VIPs, friends and relatives in attendance - a genuine Cash family reunion was unfolding inside the venue. Cindy Cash was present, while Kathy Cash and Carlene Carter each took a moment to share heartfelt remarks about the museum and their father's legacy. John Carter Cash appeared via video message, and the man who sounds most like Johnny himself - his eldest grandson, Thomas Gabriel - was also spotted quietly taking in the scene from the shadows. In addition to an event space there was a theater with an expansive curving screen that featured a vibrant life spanning film. In another section there was a wall of TVs that changed from album covers, to art, to photographs and that was across from a series of eye-catching stained glass windows depicting Johnny's faith, family and history. Whether you live in Music City or are a tourist the Johnny Cash Musuem is well worth a visit.
