Zoolumination Returns to Provide Festive Holiday Fun and a Charming Cultural Exchange in Nashville

by Rich and Laura Lynch

Music City get ready for another edition of Zoolumination which is one of the largest Chinese lantern festivals in the States! The Nashville Zoo has been hosting this annual event for a number of years, and it has become a much-anticipated tradition for many families here in Middle Tennessee. Zoolumination is running from November 13th, 2025, through February 08, 2026, so there is plenty of time to take in this exceptional exhibit.

Zoolumination returns to the Nashville Zoo in 2025.

However, you may want to explore Zoolumination before Christmas as their North Pole Village is decked out for the holidays with colorful displays of animals, candles, candy canes, Christmas trees and more. There are also opportunities to meet Santa from November 28th through December 24th, 2025, at the barn behind the Historic Home starting at 5:00 pm. In addition to the cheerful Christmas Village, visitors can ice skate at the inviting Smashville Ice Rink - presented by Nobody Trashes Tennessee. This add-on can be enjoyed as long as the temperature is below 50 degrees. The ticket for the rink includes a 45-minute session and skate rental.

Christmas, culture and real ice skating - Zoolumination has it all in Nashville.

Zoolumination 2025 features new designs and over a thousand lanterns, some 100 feet long and 50 feet high - this experience will enchant all ages! Among the many delightful displays that we favored was the multicolored dinosaurs along with animals, birds, butterflies and flowers. This year, Festival Field was converted to a European Village with an impressive castle as its centerpiece. We observed that some of the European stores made of lanterns had printed images adding to the effect of looking into a shop. Other lanterns were enhanced by strings of lights with the peacock exhibit being the perfect and pretty example of combining artistic mediums.

In addition to all the custom-made lanterns and festive illuminations, patrons can watch cultural entertainers perform nightly at 6:00, 7:00 and 8:00 pm at the Ajax Turner Amphitheater. Plus, some animal friends such as the Andean bear, the flamingos and the Sumatran tiger can be seen, and Unseen New World will be open on most occasions. Also, Chick-fil-A Adventure 4D Theater is showing Scrooge 4D: A Christmas Carol - tickets are available at Entry Village and the theater.

Colorful dragons and large lighted structures are hallmarks of the annual must-see event in Music City.

Zoolumination is a large, lavish Chinese lantern festival that we look forward to each year and 2025 was magical. The Nashville Zoo is an educational and entertaining place to explore year-round. Their staff is committed to conservation and are actively engaged in breading programs, habitat protection and research. Special programs such as Zoolumination among many supports their mission and is so enjoyable (a win-win) so please plan a day and/or evening trip to the Nashville Zoo soon.
