Vince Gill Soars as Residency Returns to the Ryman with a Celebration of 50 Years of Excellence in the Music Biz
Vince Gill told the mythical tale of backing out his driveway in his pickup truck 50 years ago as an 18-year old guitar slinger ready to take on the world with his quality picking skills. Fast forward a half century and he is still out on the road - wrapping up a 30+ city 2025 summer trek with five big shows at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on August 07, 08, 09, 15 and 16 that thrilled audiences with a generous and Springsteenesque amount of music featuring fan favorites, a plethora of new songs, plenty more insightful stories and ample humor and wit thrown in for good measure.
![]() The Vince Gill Band testified at the Mother Church in August. Grammy Award winning Vince Gill started out in the 1970's playing in local bluegrass bands. Then during his tenure with Pure Prairie League (1978 to 1982) he achieved mainstream success as the lead vocalist on their hit single "Let Me Love You Tonight" in addition to writing several of their songs. Gill briefly played guitar in Rodney Crowell's backing band the Cherry Bombs before beginning a solo career in country music in the 1980's. Since then, he has won countless awards. Today, he is still a well-respected artist that is also known for a large number of collaborations as a backup singer, duet partner, session player and songwriter with his most recent alliance with the Eagles. We were in the house on August 9th, as the evening kicked off with a performance from Corrina who is the daughter of Amy Grant and Vince Gill. She has worked with them since she was a teen and in 2021 started releasing her own music. Corrina with her talented team presented a versatile set of songs packed with visual lyrics. She has an expressive expansive vocal range and appears to have learned a lot from her parents. Corrina wisely introduced herself as Corrina Grant Gill stating how excited she was to open for her father who she called her hero and she pointed out that she was wearing a t-shirt with her famous mom on it. Much of her set featured tracks from her debut album that came out earlier this year. Highpoints of her performance was the dramatic "Twister", a tune about Nashville called "Ten Year Town" based on her life in music with plenty of relatable observations and "Too Much" for those who have been told they are too emotional. The attentive audience gave Corrina a well-deserved standing ovation at the end of her opening slot proving that she was ready for the brighter glare of the Mother Church spotlight. A little before 9 p.m., Vince along with his sizeable band received a warm welcome as they went right into a captivating "One More Last Chance" that was the first of quite a few songs where the group's collective talent was showcased. Gill is a man who is all about musicianship which means that he wants others to shine, too. After a run of snappier tunes Gill switched gears to the sorrowful "Tryin' to Get Over You".
![]() Corrina Grant Gill received a well-deserved standing ovation opening for her dad at the Ryman. "Welcome to the Ryman and a special thank you for how you treated my daughter," greeted Gill before joking that he was going to play a Coldplay number. Instead, he presented one of his popular tunes about cheating observing that the topic is what makes county music great. This was the perfect lead in to "Pocket Full of Gold". Gill also talked about some of his favorite artists and paid tribute to Merle Haggard with "Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down" paired with Buck Owens' "Together Again". Throughout the night, Vince talked about family, the art of songwriting and his fluctuating weight commenting that his cardiologist was in the crowd. Also, in the house was Amy Grant who seemed to be enjoying the concert just as much as the fans. Gill also mentioned how thrilled he was to be doing his own tour since a lot of his time has been spent with the Eagles and it's hard to believe that he has been with them close to a decade already. Still waiting for some new studio songs from that bunch! Gill had high praise for his band. He asked Jedd Hughes (guitarist) to take center stage to present his original tune "Loving You Is The Only Way to Fly" and Gill requested that vocalist Wendy Moten handle "Don't Touch Me" in honor of the recent passing of the Queen of the Grand Ole Opry – the much-loved Jeannie Seely. She nailed it. Corrina returned to sing "When My Amy Prays" which Gill wrote for his wife. Corrina sang the tribute to her mom beautifully with slightly changed lyrics and it was clear that Vince was proud of his offspring as she enters the family business in such a big way. Gill played plenty of hits on Saturday along with some new material including "I Gave You Everything I Had" a ballad of gratitude and "Nobody Held Her Like Me" about a relationship with a guitar but it could have had more than one meaning. The new compositions were of the same caliber as his more familiar singles. He dedicated "When a Solider Dies" to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Later, "Go Rest High On The Mountain" was moving as always and you can't go wrong with "Whenever You Come Around" which came towards the end of a night filled with family, humor, music and stories. On the 9th, the Gills started on Saturday and in theory did not finish the show until nearly Sunday morning as Vince played about three dozen songs. He has been on a solo tour since early May with two more dates at the Ryman before returning to the Eagles for multiple 2025 gigs at the Sphere in Las Vegas in a continuation of that legendary group's ongoing critically-acclaimed residency at the futuristic theater.
