The Blue Angels Triumphantly Take Flight On Sunday at The Great Tennessee Air Show in Smyrna
Like any high-profile outdoor athletic event sometimes weather can throw a wrench in the machine as was the case with Day 1 of the Great Tennessee Air Show that was held June 7th - 8th at Smyrna Airfield in Rutherford County. On Saturday, a looming cloud threatened all day - and, while most of the participants were able to take to the skies - show headliners the U.S. Navy Blue Angels could not citing safety and a low ceiling as the reason for their cancellation.

Organizers of the event generously invited all ticket holders from Day 1 back for Day 2 that saw the Blue Angels head to the skies at around 2:30 p.m. to perform their famed low altitude show since lingering cloud cover remained thus keeping temperatures in the mid-80's to the comfort and delight of the several thousand fans lined up on the tarmac.

![]() The Great Tennessee Air Show and the Blue Angles once again provided countless thrills and chills in Smyrna. There was a wrench in the machine still, though, as the F/A-18 Super Hornet #6 bypassed the runway for a trip to the back-up plane #7 due to an undisclosed technical problem just before takeoff. Moments prior the Blue Angels support staff and crew went through their meticulous pre-flight routine with a thoroughly rehearsed military precision that is always a joy to watch. Then it was on with the flawless show by these pilots who are also considered top athletes for their extreme workouts that help build core, leg and arm strength required to withstand the incredible G-forces that their mind blowing maneuvers present while flying for their enthusiastic fans below.
