Shen Yun Is Divinely Inspiring at the Fisher Center in Nashville

by Rich and Laura Lynch

The Fisher Center in Nashville, Tennessee hosted the cultural event of the year with multiple showings of Shen Yun over Mother's Day weekend (2025). It was our first time experiencing Shen Yun and we expected it to be a beautiful presentation of Chinese costumes, dance and history. It was all that! Yet, it was also divinely inspired.

The word shen means divine being and yun is rhythm so the idea behind this presentation is divine beings dancing in heaven. Shen Yun is part of Falun Dafa - a newer religious movement that combines meditation and moral teachings rooted in Buddhism and Taoism with a focus on compassion, tolerance and truthfulness. They are known for their opposition to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the belief in a creator, rejection of modern medicine along with other views described as conservative.

Shen Yun took us to the mystical world of ancient China to experience a lost culture through the incredible art of classical Chinese dance - and see legends come to life. Two narrators - a man speaking in English and a woman speaking in Chinese - explained the stories of each scene. The opening number "A New Era Begins" introduced us to the creator who with his followers returns to earth in an enchanting display of colorful costumes combined with a dynamic dance bookended by the closer of "The Creator Has Arrived". For us, viewing these concepts through our filter of a Western faith was a vision of what the rapture and return of Jesus might look like.

Between the alpha and omega of this show were more delightful dances and legends that shined a bright light on the rich traditions of China as told through well-choregraphed numbers enhanced by ethnic clothing that in some cases became part of the movements. "Water Sleeves" was a fine and fluid example as the ladies crafted the effect of waves with their sleeves.

As the program unfolded, we realized that U.S. history only goes back a few hundred years whereas China's is thousands resulting in many innovations from the East in art and science. The evolution from Chinese dance to modern day ballet and gymnastics was apparent. The music was also magestic as the Shen Yun Orchestra combined classical Western and Eastern instruments.

There were many lively moments in Shen Yun but "Unprecedented Crime" presented the cruel persecution of those who follow the path of Falun Dafa. There were two scenes in which singers sang about "The Way". The vocalists had the unparalleled ability to sing Chinese text using the traditional bel canto that were translated on the screen above them.

As much as the costumes, dance, music, stagecraft and stories were impressive what amazed us the most was how the performers were able to travel back and forth from the stage into the backdrops. With a quick step down a character was taken up into the screen which greatly expanded the places the show could go. Shen Yun has wisely patented this magical innovation.

Shen Yun pushed the boundaries of the performing arts, with its brilliant blend of stunning costuming, high-tech backdrops and an orchestra like no other. Even if you have seen Shen Yun before it is still well worth seeing again as each year changes are made to the storyline, choreography, clothing and more. They also have a subscription video platform to watch past performances along with other options. So, check out the divinely inspired Shen Yun live or online.
