Umphrey's McGee and Friends Are Simply Super at UMBowl XI in Nashville
by Rich and Laura Lynch
Simple? Well, not really. But, super for sure as powerhouse progenitors of the jamband genre Umphrey's McGee (UM) presented their annual UMBowl on April 04 & 05, 2025 at the revered Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee.
UMBowl XI was a winner and instant classic at the Mother Church in Nashville.
The concept now in its 11th inception is an opportunity for UM to expand their already exploratory muse. Past UMBowls saw the band creating new narratives based on fan-picked jams from prior shows (known as “Jimmy Stewarts”), invent improvisations inspired by fan-made art, live score a montage of classic movie scenes and premiere original shorts, parodies and more.
On the 4th, the theme was sports. The word bowl makes one think of the classic NFL Championship which comes around once a year as does the UMBowl. Three sets - matches up with three periods in hockey. At the start of the show UM showed a video of people at a mock sportscaster's desk surrounded by baseball paraphernalia talking up the gig. Similar to a sporting event the concert had plenty of twists and turns resulting in a winning night of music.

UM kicked off strong with the single song that covered the bases of "Nipple Trix" (>) "Preamble" (>) "Mantis Ghetts" (>) "Mantis" (with interactive audience votes going to "All Things Ninja" jam chosen over "Back In Black"). Adding to the already complex soundscape was the effective use of lights and videos. On a number of occasions colorful shapes covered the ceilings and the walls at the Ryman giving things an even more trippy feel. During the set fans were given an opportunity to text 22333 and vote on the combination of hues that they felt suited the mood.
After a short break a quicker second period was the Band's Choice that featured experimental takes on "Bridgeless", "Slacker" (>) "Maybe Someday", "Miss Tinkle's Overture" (>) "In the Kitchen" before ending with "Them Changes" (Buddy Miles cover) (>) "Lenny" (Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble cover).
Outlaw Umphrey's was a hit - could a country jamband album be far behind?
Special guest Grace Bowers joined UM on a number of jams. Grace is a young award-winning artist on a meteoric rise. Her debut album Wine on Venus garnered a lot of respect with Rolling Stone calling Bowers "Nashville's new guitar hero". The pinch hit with UM was a great opportunity for her to test her improvisational skills. More vibrant visuals added to the vibe of the second set.
Since UM was performing at the Mother Church of Country the third period was "Outlaw Umphrey's" with a focus on that genre. UM scored more great players with Sam Bush and Anders Beck joining in on a number of tunes including "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" (Bob Dylan) and "Kaw-Liga" (Hank Williams).
Guests Grace Bowers and Sam Bush join the UM percussion squad of Kris Myers and Andy Farag in the 615.
"Me and My Uncle" (John Phillips) was a big hit, too. Singer Jennifer Hartswick made the roster allowing UM to expand upon Dolly’s "9 to 5" with Jennifer on lead vox. The last inning to wrap up night #1 of the great adventure saw UM and friends throw out a celebratory verison of "Up on Cripple Creek" originally performed by The Band to send everyone home on a high note.
Umphrey's McGee originated from South Bend, Indiana around 1997. Their sound is an eclectic blend of bluegrass, blues, country, electronic, folk, funk, jam, jazz, prog, reggae and rock. Thus, their shows are diverse especially since they often utilize interactive tools that allow their fans to add inputs. UM’s intermingling of improvisation and innovations has led to many calling them the "kings of live music" and they lived up to that moniker on Friday.

What the Nashville-themed set proved is that UM - who is mostly known for their own wildly complex compositions and winding interpretations of the music they cover - can actually play it straight when they want to. The fun third act at the Ryman left many wondering in Music City if a country album could possibly be in their future. We know - that's highly unlikely. But, stranger things have happened once that hallowed stage on 4th Avenue has its way with you.
The Ryman Auditorium aka the Mother Church of Country is considered one of the best sounding rooms in the States. The hall continues to pay tribute to its rich history but also hosts a wide array or artists such as Umphrey’s McGee who did play a venue appropriate set on the 4th. Outside, the Kiran Gupta trio put their ample and jazzy talents on display during a spotlight performance that was being filmed for broadcast.
