The Nashville Kats Make a Determined Arena Football One Debut at the Downtown Municipal Auditorium
by Rich and Laura Lynch
The Nashville Kats - now playing in the league structure called Arena Football One - conducted their home opener at 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at Municipal Auditorium following their successful relaunch in last season's notable return to the shrunken gridiron in Music City.
The AF1 is right at home in Nashville.
Several changes to the team's executive side and ownership group left the Kats scrambling to put tickets on sale for this first match in AF1 but they finally got them online just five days out from kickoff. In town, Nashville was proving its sports bona fides as Nashville SC, the Predators and the Sounds were all hosting home games on Saturday. Throw in the nationally televised March Madness and it's pretty amazing that the team drew a fairly substantial crowd to their downtown dome debut this season in spite of the delay.
It was the Kats versus Albany on a busy sports night in Nashville.
The good turnout serves as a testament to the brand loyalty and fan attachment that the Kats acquired in eight years time during two different runs in the Arena Football League. Throw in the unexpected 2024 reboot that restored a culture of family friendly football fun and you can see there's a lot to build on if AF1 is to have legs in their quest to become the premier circuit for indoor football. While last season's edition may have had better production values (especially when they played in the brand spanking new confines of the F&M Bank Arena in Clarksville) and more visible local sponsors supporting the team - it was cool to see the return of Kool Kat and the Lady Kats dance squad working to keep the fans in the stand entertained over the four quarters of furious indoor football action.

At halftime - a quality three-song set by the gifted and engaging Kayley Bishop - proved that the Kats are still adept at hunting down top quality music acts in Music City for their mid-game performances. Bishop shined and took the opportunity in the stadium spotlight to showcase her sound that she says, "blends a little Holy Spirit Soul, a little Rock and Roll and a country highway that takes you home". We won't argue the point as she turned us and several others in attendance into fans from her vantage point on the 25-yard line.
Kayley Bishop performed a spirited halftime set at the downtown dome.
As for the game, it was a close match and a hard fought contested battle but in the end the Kats could not overcome costly turnovers ultimately losing 42-34 to the Albany Firebirds while dropping to 0-2 on the young AF1 season. The next chance to see the Kats at home is on Friday, April 4, 2025 with two other hometown matches on the schedule for May and June. Check their website for updates.
The Lady Kats returned to the arena to strut their stuff for the fans once again in 2025.
