Checking Out the Music City Greenways With a Little Help From the Nashville Public Library
by Rich and Laura Lynch
The Nashville Library system is so much more than just books and multi-media. NPL also offers a unique collection they call "The Library of Things" that features an array of useful items - including activities and games, health and fitness equipment, tools and electronics, food and party items, crafts and hobbies and musical instruments. Our favorite is the BCycle passes that let you explore the local Nashville Greenways as we did in late October 2024 taking in several rides along Shelby Bottoms and the Cornelia Fort Airpark.
The bikes are lined up and ready to go in Nashville.
Once aquired the BCycle passes provided by NPL are an easy-to-use access key in the shape of a guitar pick that allows unlimited access to any of the cycle stations located in and around the city for a full week's time. An end user simply has to tap the silver button at the station and hold the pick on the bike release area for a few seconds - and walla - your electric assist powered ride is ready to go.
Our passes on display at the Shadow Lane Cornelia Fort Airpark location.
Our favorite place to ride is the site of the former Cornelia Fort Airpark - now a trailhead in Shelby Bottoms located in East Nashville. Named after a woman pilot who flew during World War II the now abandoned tarmac is a favorite destination for walkers, runners and bikers of all skill levels. It is not uncommon to see kids on training wheels being passed by semi-pro cyclists who are moving at impressive speeds through the wilderness area near the Cumberland River.
This historical marker greets patrons at the entrance to Cornelia Fort Airpark.
It is also liklely that you will witness abundant wildlife during your vist and during our recent time there we saw egrets, eagles, blue herons, deer, turltes - and a few snakes slithering along with us on the paved bike path.
Nature abounds at the Shelby Bottoms Greenway in East Nashville.
BCycle website says that they offer a rider-centric bike sharing experience with products that work together to make moving around town as fun and convenient as possible. Having used the service several times now we can heartily recommend the flawless experience as a great means of exploring the many great miles that the paved Nashville Greenway system has to offer.
Team MCN takes a break from their ride to conduct a photo shoot on the tarmac.
