Fryce Cream Is Frosty and Fun at New Donelson Location

by Rich and Laura Lynch

It turns out that renowned Nashville chef Jeremy Barlow was on to something this whole time when in 2021 he launched his well-tested french fries and designer custard concept leading to the opening of his flagship store on 12th Avenue South in Nashville known as Fryce Cream. We went there once and tried the creamy ice cream and loved it. Now, the enterprise has doubled its footprint with the addition of a Donelson outpost that opened two months ago just off of the Briley Parkway.

At the new Fryce Cream location in Donelson.

We paid a visit on Friday afternoon, August 16, 2024 to check out the new location and to try the signature dish - the "Fryce Cream" - a combination platter with a generous helping of soft ice cream, custom made french fries and a dipping sauce chosen from a list of several selections offered. As the story goes, chef Jeremy Barlow had the light of inspiration go off when he was at an old-styled diner with his daughter and together they dipped potato sticks into their shakes. Years later, when we met Jeremy at his store he also credited Wendy's as an influence as their famous Frosty's also made for a great fry dunking experience.

Fryce Cream offers class and quality along the way with an emphasis placed on using top ingredients and well-honed culinary experience to back up the seemingly simple idea. In just one example, we have never seen vanilla bean used in soft serve before and it added a mouthful of satisfying authentic flavor as we downed the combo inside their brightly lit dining space.

In a savvy and seemingly genius business move the second edition of Fryce Cream timed its opening to the new Donelson Branch of the Nashville Public Library debuting around the same time at a busy location just off of the Lebanon Pike. Not only will Fryce Cream get a chance to spread their gospel of the union of french fries and ice cream and quirky novelty dish to all of the library's visitors. But, the new location is in striking distant of several schools, churches, the YMCA and the touristy zone of Music Valley - so a word of mouth marketing plan - can be put to full effect as visitors pour in from the Briley and beyond. Now, they just need a few of this city's famous residents to start singing their praises and they can really amp this up to the next level!

Fryce Cream epitomizes the merging of sweet and savory in Nashville.
