Taj Mahal Remains a Blues Wonder of the World at Grimey's in Nashville

by Rich and Laura Lynch

The blues and guitar legend Taj Mahal made a stop at Grimey's on Thursday, March 14, 2024 for an afternoon in-store perfromance and signing that drew an impressive crowd to Nashville, Tennessee's enduring home of new and preloved music.

Taj Mahal takes the stage in East Nashville.

Taj was in town to promote his most recent incredible live album, Swingin' Live at the Church in Tulsa - that dropped on the Ides of March. But, no need to be wary - the extraordinary collection recorded live at the Tulsa studio, best known as the home base of Shelter Records and the late, great Leon Russell - makes a fantastic case for Taj Mahal the man's status as a well-constructed musical wonder.

At 81 years old, Taj can easily claim musical legend status. He has four Grammy Awards to his name (out of fifteen nominations), alongside a lifetime of other achievements and a career spanning seven decades, releasing nearly 50 albums, Taj is both an architect and custodian of the roots music sound. But, words are one thing and action is another and the music jumps off the grooves of the album's 10 tracks in impressive fashion. Also impressive - the record was flying off the shelves at Grimey's as fans lined up to meet and greet the artist following his generous 40-minute set in Nashville.

This new Taj Mahal recording was flying off the shelves at Grimey's.

Mahal's show found him switching between a mandolin and a stylish copper Recording King Tricone guitar. His enthusiastically received setlist included "Wild About My Lovin'", "Fishin' Blues" and "Lovin' in My Baby's Eyes" - a track he worked up with Americana duo Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley. When we asked Taj if he would be joining them at their show later in the evening at the nearby Franklin Theater - he replied that he hoped they would have shown up at his show. As for Mahal, it's no wonder that he told us he was headed to a Nashville studio that evening to record even more music that will undoubtedly add to his already monumental status in the halls of musical icons.

If there is any question as to whether or not Taj Mahal remains a musical wonder of the world - well, just ask the fans in Australia about that when he flies down under to do double duty at the Byron Bay Bluesfest in Tyagarah, New South Wales at the end of the month.
