Legendary Pinup Model Bettie Page Has a Hume-Fogg Homecoming in Nashville

by Rich and Laura Lynch

As students prepare to return to schools on August 08, 2023 all across Nashville let's take a look back at an important event that took place at Hume-Fogg High School on April 22. That spring date was renamed the first "Bettie Page Day" when the Metro Nashville Historical Commission dedicated a historical marker to the "Queen of Pinups" in downtown Nashville to coincide with the legend's 100th birthday.

The Metro Nashville Historical Commission celebrated Bettie Page on her 100th birthday.

Bettie Page was a Hume-Fogg graduate but her stunning looks, charisma and curvature propelled her to become an icon of feminism and a harbinger of the sexual revolution that would follow a decade after her photos began going mainstream in the 1950's. She has remained significant in the modern era with female artists like Madonna, Demi Moore, Uma Thurman and Katy Perry all citing her as a source of inspiration.

Bettie Mae Page is fondly remembered for her long jet-black hair, piercing blue eyes and trademark bangs that have impacted artists for generations. After her death in 2008, Playboy founder Hugh Hefner called her "a remarkable lady, an iconic figure in pop culture who influenced sexuality, taste in fashion, someone who had a tremendous impact on our society".
