by Rich and Laura Lynch

Thanks to Cass Teague of Pride Publishing Group who invited us to the Salon Noir Opening Soiree which took place on August 12, 2022. The free event celebrated the start of a micro-exhibition entitled Elise Kendrick: Salon Noir. Elise's work will be on display at the Frist Art Museum in Nashville, Tennessee through December 31, 2022.

Elise Kendrick: Salon Noir now showing at the Frist Art Museum.

The Salon Noir Opening Soirée was held at the Frist Grand Lobby. Elise Kendrick and student curator Jonathan Diggs spoke with attendees about her art and the process of setting up the exhibit. A hairstylist and live music were also part of the evening's festivities. Kendrick through her artistry is looking to have conversations about common perceptions and misconceptions surrounding Black hair: "With this series, my intent is to allow my subjects to feel seen, to take up space, and to show that women of color are not monolithic."

Elise Kendrick: Salon Noir shines a light on the elegance of African American women, their hairstyles and the Black salon experience. "Salon Noir" is set up in a never-before utilized space at the Frist to display art. The entrances to and the elevator itself surrounds visitors with images of Black hair care products and hairstyles in a bold presentation.

Student curator Jonathan Diggs and Elise Kendrick spoke with attendees at the opening soiree.

Elise Kendrick: Salon Noir is the first show at the Frist organized through Project Uplift which is an internship program that guides a student thought the process of curating, designing and marketing a mircro-exhibition to feature an artist of color. Jonathan Diggs from TSU with guidance from Project Uplift absorbed all aspects of exhibition planning which we learned can often takes years but it is condensed into three months so Jonathan had a lot to do in a short period of time.

"Working with all of the departments at the Frist and receiving their guidance and advice along the way has given me a great appreciation for the work of museum professionals," says Diggs. "As a graphic designer, I see how important communication is when translating the curator's ideas to an actual exhibition. Fortunately, I have been able to do both with this internship. Project Uplift truly has reshaped my thought process for the better around design and teamwork."

The Frist Art Museum located in the heart of downtown Nashville features pieces from around the world plus their halls are adorned with art work from local kids. Many of the Frist's exhibits rotate so there is often something new to experience and remember Kendrick's innovative prints will be on display there through the end of 2022.

The elevator expands to become exhibit space at the Frist Art Museum.
