Jimmie Vaughan Brings Texas Blues to Nashville

by Rich and Laura Lynch

A sizable crowded had gathered at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee on September 21, 2021 to catch Jimmie Vaughan. Although Vaughan is spending most of 2021 on his own "The Story Tour", Tuesday's gig was an opening slot for fellow guitar great Eric Clapton. Nashville was one of eight shows that Jimmie with the Tilt-A-Whirl Band shared the stage with EC. Jimmie was warmly welcomed in Music City as he and his very capable crew took the stage.

Jimmie Vaughan and company brought the Texas Blues to the Bridgestone Arena.

"Hi folks, welcome to Nashville," greeted the Texan as they opened with a soaring "D/FW" followed by a pleasurable "The Pleasure's All Mine". Other highlights were a cover of Webb Pierce's "I Ain't Never" along with a tip of the hat to Slim Harpo with "Baby, Scratch My Back" which included some interesting chicken scratching guitar solos. "Boom-Bapa-Boom" along with other tunes allowed band members to shine especially the horn section. Of course, Jimmie sizzled when he served up his signature styled Texas Blues in a set that was rock solid.

At the end of the night, Vaughan joined Clapton during the encore which also featured up and coming blues man Marcus King. In some ways it was a symbolic passing of the scepter to the one who might be the next important King of the genre or the next generation of guitar "gods".

Jimmie Vaughan was born in 1951 in the great state of Texas. Jimmie was heavily influenced by the "Three Kings" (Albert, Freddie, and B.B. King). Besides his solo work many know Vaughan for his tenure in The Fabulous Thunderbirds. They released four albums between 1979 and 1983. Another significant moment in Jimmie's celebrated career was a record made with his brother the late Stevie Ray. Family Style came out in September of 1990. Sadly, it would be their only collaboration as Stevie was killed in a helicopter crash the month before its release. The 10 track platter presented the potential of the duo showcasing Jimmie's precision paired with his brother's passion.

As mentioned, Vaughn is on the road in support of his latest project. The Jimmie Vaughan Story is described as a box set of "powerful music paired with newly discovered recordings. A treasure trove of never-before-seen photos and writings are in the gorgeous book included in the package. There are images of the Vaughan family, including childhood photos of Jimmie, Stevie and their parents, and a bonanza of photos that illustrate, tour-guide-like, Jimmie's entire career, from childhood onward to today. Among the writings is an interview from the 1978 Austin Sun, considered to be the first Jimmie Vaughan ever did, along with an essay by journalist and record producer Bill Bentley, and Jimmie's life story in his own words: a lifetime of memories, historical occurrences and family insights, all shared now for the first time."

This voluminous new box set was being promoted from the stage in Tennessee.
