Music City Blitz Takes the Field and Triumphs for Special Olympics Tennessee in Nashville

by Rich and Laura Lynch

In the competitive world of sports everyone loves a winner. It's one of the primary reasons top athletes train so hard and play the game. To get a "W". Even better, however, is the concept of "win-win" and that scenario unfolded during the Music City Blitz flag football tournament held at Nissan Stadium on June 6, 2021 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Music City Blitz lit up the big scoreboard all day long.

You see, Music City Blitz is an Adult Flag Football Tournament where teams from Nashville and the surrounding region get the opportunity to play on a professional football field usually reserved for the Tennessee Titans of the NFL. As far as the "win-win" - well, the 4th Annual event was held to benefit Special Olympics of Tennessee.

Following an explosive opening ceremony that saw teams and players introduced through the stadium PA system, shown on the Jumbotron and run through the Titans Home Tunnel and Game Day Swords, smoke, and fire - it was ready to get down to business on four 30 x 70 yard fields with simultaneous game play on each throughout the long afternoon on the gridiron.

This competition is established for adults only except the opening match that was played by Special Olympic athletes. Divisions for Music City Blitz included "Top Gun" consisting of teams who play together on a regular basis; "Recreational" made up of players who play on a semi-regular basis or have limited organized football experience and come together for this event to have fun; and, "Battle of the Badges" featuring athletes who are current or retired Law Enforcement, Fire Fighters, EMS or first responders.

There was a lot of skill and determined athleticism on display at Nissan Stadium.

All proceeds raised by flag football teams benefit Special Olympics Tennessee athletes and help foster the mission of providing year-round sports training and athletic competitions in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Congratulations to all the participants - especially the winners in their respective categories: Simply Amazing were the "Top Gun" champs; Murfreesboro PD Donuts won the hard-fought #BattleOfTheBadges; and Turf Kingz were the last team standing in the competitive Recreational Division. This year's event raised nearly $40,000 for the cause and next year should be one for the record books as plans are already underway for the 5th Annual Music City Blitz in Music City.
