Lance Lopez Lets Loose By the Lake
by Rich and Laura Lynch
Top level talent often performs at a local BBQ joint in Nashville. For example, hot licks by Lance Lopez were served up at Papa Turney's on May 28, 2021. Lance (like many) was influenced by SRV and by age 14 Lopez was professionally playing at local bars in the New Orleans, Louisiana area. At 17, he was hired by soul great Johnnie Taylor, with whom he toured for six months. At 18, Lance became the leader of blues legend Lucky Peterson's band. While on tour with Lucky, as fate would have it, Lance befriended drummer Buddy Miles (Band Of Gypsys) who would mentor and co-produce Lopez's debut album First Things First (1998). Since then, Lance has recorded more records and has toured the world perfecting his craft which on Friday was sizzling. Lopez's power trio presented bold flavored blues in a variety of styles that left folks stunned.

Papa Turney's proudly presents artists like Lance while cooking up old fashioned hickory smoked BBQ with homemade sides - plus Mama Turney's famous pies. Locally owned, this establishment embraces its southern heritage with friendly hospitality and a love of music. On most nights their focus is on the blues but country, gospel and more can be heard there, too. Papa Turney's is located at 3979 Bell Road, Hermitage, Tennessee at the Nashville Shores Mariana. It is a short drive from downtown Nashville. The restaurant/venue has indoor and outdoor seating which overlooks the Percy Priest Lake.

Lance Lopez truly impressed the crowd at the Nashville Shores Marina.
Upon our arrival Mike warmly greeted us with menus and advised us to place our order at the counter. A bit later a tasty meal was delivered. In the meantime, we enjoyed an appetizer of scorching leads offered by Lance Lopez who was tearing it up. Papa Turney has a good ear as he is also a musician who plays at his place on Wednesdays and Saturdays during their open Blues Jam. So come on down for some down home southern cooking paired with live performances and if you are an artist bring your guitar on jam nights.

Papa Mike Turney was a fine host who sometimes straps on the six-string himself.
