In Sevier County There Is One Road to Rule Them All

by Rich and Laura Lynch

When you think of signature roads in Tennessee the first that come to mind might be Beale Street in Memphis or Broadway in downtown Nashville. But, both those thorofares have nothing on U.S. Route 441 as it snakes through the popular tourist destinations of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg in Sevier County.

Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies in Gatlinburg.

Both of these towns sit at the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains and as you drive through the five-mile strip of attractions and tourist traps you get the distinct feeling that you've entered a parallel universe where Disney meets the Las Vegas Strip and all run by the Clampett clan and surrounded by natural wonders.

The Titanic Museum Attraction on Route 441 in Pigeon Forge.

Believe it or not, Dollywood is not the only enterprise that is dominant in the region. Ripley Entertainment is ever-present and contributes many family-favorite activities once the hiking and bear watching is complete. Among the several tantalizing options are Believe It or Not!, Mirror Maze, Moving Theater, Haunted Adventure, Guinness World Records Adventure, Davy Crockett's Mini-Golf, Old MacDonald's Farm Mini-Golf, and the spectacular Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies.

The New Madrid didn't snap it's just the newly renamed "Beyond the Lens".

But, if you were to only focus on the lifework and legacy of Robert Ripley or Dolly Parton's other famous curves in the form of her many roller coasters - you would just be getting the tip of the iceberg. In fact, you can visit a replica of the Titanic at the Titanic Museum Attraction that is built to a one half scale of the original ill-fated cruise liner. Don't worry, if you pass the newly renamed "Beyond The Lens" - the New Madrid fault didn't snap. The toppled over high rise is the troubling landmark's way of saying you won't believe what you'll see inside. As far as the rest of Route 441 in Sevier County is concerned - you'll have to see it to believe it.
