MCN On the Road: Catherine the Great in Floyd, VA

by Rich and Laura Lynch

While recently sojourning through the South we had the extreme pleasure to happen upon one Catherine the Great when she opened a day's worth of FREE music on May 18, 2019 at 12 p.m. at the charming Floyd Country Store in Floyd, Va.

We were impressed by Catherine Backus who is more widely known as one-half of twinsome duo the Skipperdees. A native East-Tennessean and graduate of the University of Georgia, Catherine now resides in Virginia, where she splits her musical time between playing bluegrass with old dudes and singing songs she wrote. In Floyd, her presentation demanded attention and we could see why she has drawn comparisons to Kathleen Edwards, Lori McKenna, and Gillian Welch.

The Town of Floyd is becoming known as a regional destination for music, especially bluegrass music, and old-time music. The Floyd Country Store's Friday Night Jamboree, which features local and area bands, has been held each Friday night for many years, gaining in popularity during the past decade. The venue utilizes a large and welcoming open room that doubles as retail space to showcase national acts including an upcoming sold-out event on August 27 featuring Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn.
