MCN On the Road: Beth Lee in Knoxville

by Rich and Laura Lynch

Imagine our surprise when we rolled into Knoxville, Tennessee on May 15, 2019 only to be immediately turned on to a sultry singer from Austin, Texas who was in the midst of a steamy one-hour set as part of WDVX's regularly scheduled Blue Plate Special radio show held live at the city's tourist information center on Gay Street.

MCN On the Road: Beth Lee in Knoxville
Austin's Beth Lee performs on Knoxville "Blue Plate Special" radio show in May 2019.

Hailing from the Lone Star State, Beth Lee grew up on the grit and soul of the Houston music scene. Her father was a long time musician from the Bayou City. Since 2008, Beth has been playing live and recording her original music with Austin musicians that have an ear for her songwriting ability. Her influences span generations of blues, country, and rock 'n' roll greats that lead her to a unique soulful, country-tinged brand of roots rock 'n' roll. With her 2013 release One More Time Again - and debut as Beth Lee & The Breakups - she began honing in and developing her energetic live performances. Her soulful, heart-on-your-sleeve songwriting style evolved to include a sultry, sassy, rock 'n' roll edge.

Her most recent album, Keep Your Mouth Shut, garnered positive reviews from independent radio and roots publications, including a #19 rank on the Americana Music Show's year end list and a flattering review from KUTX's Laurie Gallardo, who coined the sound as "country-fried rock 'n' soul". It was also listed in Alternate Root Magazine and Third Coast Music Magazine as one of the year's top picks. Beth continues to tour frequently throughout Texas, the Southeast, Midwest, New Mexico, and Colorado, solo and with her band, Beth Lee & The Breakups. Hope they don't break up the band! We were impressed and hope to catch her on the road again soon.
