Kevin Gordon Emerges From The In Between at Music Makers Stage in East Nashville

by Rich and Laura Lynch

Delgado Guitars' Music Makers Stage hosted Kevin Gordon with a full band on May 17, 2024. Kevin performed classics and new songs from his forthcoming album The In Between that should be released later this year. It is described as one of his most rocking albums in quite some time.

Kevin Gordon keeps on the lookout for cicadas in Tennessee.

This was our first-time visiting the Music Makers Stage. We were welcomed by Julie Delgado who is the Owner/Operator of this local music venue. As we took our seats we notice the artwork and fine fretted instruments on the wall. The later was the handy work of Julie's husband Manuel who crafts one-of-a-kind guitars in his shop next door.

Heidi Holton - recently arrived to the 615 via her North Carolina hometown - kicked off the evening with two engaging tunes enhanced by her strong strumming and strong slide playing. Since Kevin is from Louisiana, she shared a song about a street that she once lived on in New Orleans.

Kevin Gordon and his-three piece band got the job done on Gallatin Pike.

"We're here tonight to celebrate the cicada," Kevin joked as he took the stage about the trillion or so members of Brood XIX who are emerging back into the public eye after a long dormant period. Hundreds alone were flying and screeching loudly outside the entrance to Delgado Guitars providing a slightly Apopalyptic feel to the proceedings. "So, you know, I'm as much of a fan as anybody of a relatively harmless Biblical plague. But, how much longer?"

Gordon - strapping on an acoustic - then presented a piece about his time in Monroe, Louisiana before a bass player and drummer joined him for the rest of his set that featured a wide swath of his compelling compositions across much of his recorded output.

Kevin led us deeper into his home state with poetic prose based on his experiences with one of the scariest stories detailing a parade when a high school marching band was confronted by the KKK because their teacher was black. "Colfax/Step in Time" was riveting with its all too real imagery.

After that heavy moment, Julie joined Kevin to ask a few questions about how he got to Nashville which led to a quick overview of Gordan's influences which included Elvis, Jimmy Reed, punk and more. Last, was the game "This or That" where Delgado asked him a series of which artist or group Kevin preferred such as Springsteen or Sinatra.

Gordon has an MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop which accounts for his lush lyrical landscapes. Kevin's songs have been covered by Keith Richards, Levon Helm, Irma Thomas, The Hard Working Americans (featuring Todd Snider), Ronnie Hawkins, Sonny Burgess, Southside Johnny and Gordon has dueted with Lucinda Williams. During his chat with Julie, she asked who he would like to collaborate with. Gordan replied - Lucinda (again) although he also mentioned that he generally writes alone.

Newly arrived in Nashville - Heidi Holton got the ball and livestream rolling.

Returning to the music, Kevin presented a new tune while letting folks know that they could preorder The In Between. The new record has even more significance since Kevin battled throat cancer during its recording. Thankfully, he is in full voice ready to continue telling his vivid tales that the afore mentioned Williams said are like short stories.

Much of Gordon's muse echoed of the colorful culture of Louisiana along with his acute observations on life. Towards the end, Gordon sang about the simpler things in life with perhaps a note of gratitude for being back on stage doing what Kevin does best.

Like Arnold - we'll be back to the Music Makers Stage as soon as we can.
