Music City Bids Bon Voyage to Music Biz in Nashville

by Rich and Laura Lynch

The annual Music Business Association (Music Biz) conference was held in Nashville, Tennessee May 13-16, 2024. This year's gathering of music professionals was a bit bittersweet, however, because come 2025 Music Biz will convene in Atlanta, Georgia and will travel to different cities in the future. So, after a decade of mentoring the music industry in Music City - Music Biz will start taking its own advice by taking their well-honed show on the road.

Music Biz wrapped up an influential decade in Music City.

Music Biz brought together artists, corporations, influencers, labels, lawyers, tech and more to build connections and have conversations about the music industry. It all kicked off with the "Music Biz Roadshow" with an emphasis on prioritizing mental health. No doubt musical acts and the independent musician can go crazy these days trying to manage digital rights, royalties, streaming revenue, et cetera all with an eye on the ultimate potential of their publishing catalog down the line.

The multi-day summit was a commendable effort to figure out effective ways to navigate the rapid changes that continue to take place in the music business. Networking and showcasing innovations were also a big part of the well-attended conference.

Vive Le Vinyl - this company came to Nashville all the way from Paris.

Discussions with Q&As along with summits remain the marquee educational components of this four-day event. Some of the major topics tackled were: Artificial Intelligence (AI), "Concrete Results: Music's Next Uncharted Frontier," "Glocals Only: Music Marketing For A Borderless World," "The Greatest Good: Social Impact Is Good For Business" and "Changing The Game: Music & Gaming's Unique Synergies." Featured speakers included Kobalt's Laurent Hubert, SESAC Music Group's John Josephson, BandLab's Meng Ru Kuok, Hopeless Records' Louis Posen and Virgin Music Group's Jacqueline Saturn among many others.

We also noticed a focus on vinyl and creating more opportunities for females. She Is The Music (SITM) aims to get more women in the fields of engineering, producing, songwriting and more. Mamas In Music states that their mission is "to provide essential resources that empower Mothers to advance their musical careers by creating a shared network, generating opportunities, and offering financial and emotional support initiatives."

Women In Vinyl (WIV) is a nonprofit that supports women and other underrepresented groups who are producing and preserving vinyl. WIV provides business development, job boards, mentorship and scholarships to assist artists especially those interested in the vinyl format. Vinyl De Paris all the way from France was on site to discuss the process of pressing 33s.

Mozaic were presenting a new way to pay creators.

Throughout, there were on-going discussions on how much musicians now have to do for themselves. Emerging artists often have to handle business, marketing, social media and more in addition to crafting compelling compositions. However, there are resources to assist such as Set.Live who works with talent to customize and quantify fan experiences. Mozaic is ready to launch a service where large or small companies can collect commissions and royalties from partners, automatically. Plus, Mozaic can facilitate payouts and take care of other business requirements such as 1099s.

On the consumer side of things there is Deezer. This DSP hailing from Paris held a much talked about Deezer x Music Biz: Happy Hour on Tuesday night before really getting down to business at Music Biz. The Deezeer App encourages listeners to personalize their play lists based on likes thus improving their overall total experience. Also, Bandcamp is well known for their mission "to help spread the healing power of music by building a community where artists thrive through the direct support of their fans" with a sizable payout going to the musicians.

Over the course of four-days, this conference delivered resources to empower those who want to pursue a career in the music industry. The Music Business Association (Music Biz) describes itself as "a not-for-profit membership organization that advances, promotes, and invests in the future of the music business by providing a trusted forum where ideas and cooperation flourish.

Through events, education, and engagement, the Association brings together the full breadth of the industry for unparalleled access to networking, resources, and thought leadership" culminating at their annual Music Biz Conferences. So, start making your plans to attend Music Biz 2025 in Atlanta.
