Mojo Nixon's Music City Mayhem Once Again Lives Up To It's Name in Nashville

by Rich and Laura Lynch

"Mojo's Music City Mayhem" returned to Robert's Western World during AMERICANAFEST in Nashville, Tennessee on Thursday, September 21, 2023. Co-hosted by Mojo Nixon and Sarah Gayle Meech - the much anticipated event was open to the public from 3-6 pm CDT as it aired live on SiriusXM Channel 62.

Mojo Nixon brings his brand of Mayhem back to Broadway.

Mojo Nixon is an American musician who has pioneered the satirical sub-genre of psychobilly music. He is best known for his humorous, irreverent novelty song "Elvis Is Everywhere" - and, in Nashville - he has built a reputation for hosting some of the most wild musical gatherings during AMERICANAFEST week.

Classic rocker Norman Greenbaum continues his Nashville tradition at Robert's.

While not an official AMERICANAFEST event per se, the party on Broadway surely benefits from having hundreds of in-demand players in town for the week-long showcase of roots, rock, folk, blues and everything else that falls under the broad heading of Americana music. If there was any doubt that Mojo draws a crowd - well, there was not a lot of room to move inside the storied honky-tonk and a few wondered aloud if the mid-afternoon proceedings had perhaps exceeded the venue's capacity.

It was truly a rush to see blues legend Bobby Rush play with Jesse Dayton.

Still, if you happened to be there you were witness to Music City history as classic rock legend Norman Greenbaum continued his Nashville tradition of playing his famous and lucrative one hit wonder "Spirit in the Sky" to a receptive and exceedingly appreciative audience.

Your co-host Sarah Gayle Meech kept the Mayhem moving right along.

Blues rock royalty Bobby Rush also took the stage with guitar great Jesse Dayton and proceeded to trace the real meaning of The Blues for the Robert's faithful complete with a sweaty harmonica solo as The Meech Boys backed them up with well-honed professionalism that deserves to be on a larger stage than the 6x12 set up at the Western World.

Deke Dickerson played a big selection of his rockabilly repertoire.

More featured acts included Chuck Mead, Logan Ledger, Brennen Leigh, Summer Dean, Deke Dickerson, Boy Golden, The Shooouts, JesseLee Jones and Emily Ann Jones. The eclectic entertainment and the Recession Special (fried bologna sandwich, chips, Moon Pie and a cold PBR for SIX DAMN DOLLARS) - proved why a night out at Robert's is widely considered the best deal in Nashville.

Another big year of Mayhem on Broadway is in the books.
