by Rich and Laura Lynch

Parnassus Books located at 3900 Hillsboro Pike, Nashville, Tennessee will be hosting an instore author event on November 30, 2022. Peter Guralnick who co- wrote The Birth of Rock 'n' Roll: 70 Years of Sun Records will speak about his book which is a deep dive into the history of Sun Records and its founder Sam Phillips. The event is free but registration is required.

Parnassus Books is an independent bookstore for independent people. The shop which opened in 2011 is co-owned by novelist Ann Patchett and her business partner Karen Hayes. Parnassus stocks a diverse and wide range of books including fiction, non-fiction, children's, local interests and the arts. Also, all of Ann's works are signed and she will personalize any of her books for you. Plus, Parnassus hosts hundreds of special events throughout the year such as the author discussion with Mr. Guralnick on the 30th.

The Birth of Rock 'n' Roll will be released on November 22, 2022. MCN received an advance copy and let's just say that the hard copy is a work of art. It is a coffee table book packed with rare photos paired with a well-researched history of Sun Records as told through 70 of its iconic recordings. A digital edition will also be available.

The Birth of Rock 'n' Roll: 70 Years of Sun Records is a timeline of this legendary label. From the early days with primal blues artists like Howlin' Wolf and B.B. King to long nights in the studio with Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis. Readers will learn how the label was shaped and how it redefined American music. The "Sun Spot" sidebars shine light on the subjects of how the iconic logo was crafted, a look at the Million Dollar Quartet sessions and how the song "Harper Valley, PTA" funded the company. Plus, there is a complete discography at the end of the book.

Sam Phillips had an ear for sound. He struck gold early but often bigger labels would come in and steal the stars from Sun, so he was often struggling to make ends meet. Yet, no one can steal Sam's legacy as an innovative producer who played a major part in the birth of rock 'n' roll.

"Written by two of the most acclaimed music writers of our time, Peter Guralnick and Colin Escott, and featuring hundreds of rare images from the Sun archives as well as a foreword by music legend Jerry Lee Lewis, this is a one-of-a-kind book for anyone who wants to know where it all started." Both authors have written other books about Sun and its artists, thus the combination of these two forces make for an even better effort. The Birth of Rock 'n' Roll: 70 Years of Sun Records is a vibrant historical document.

So come on down to Parnassus Books on November 30, 2022 to hear Peter Guralnick speak about The Birth of Rock 'n' Roll: 70 Years of Sun Records and come out with a brighter appreciation of Sun Records and its originator Sam Phillips.
