Gibson Brands, Billy Reid and Margo Price Get Humming on a New Collaboration in Nashville

by Rich and Laura Lynch

We have had the pleasure of attending a number of industry events hosted by Gibson including their latest which was held at the Gibson Garage in Nashville, Tennessee on August 18, 2022. The theme Muscle Shoals Meets Music Row was to celebrate the partnership of Alabama-based fashion designer Billy Reid and the famed guitar maker. Their Hummingbird Collection is clothing crafted by Billy who was inspired by the iconic Hummingbird guitars favored by such musicians as Keith Richards, Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow, Thom Yorke and more.

At the party, CEO & President of Gibson Brands James "JC" Curleigh in his opening remarks touched upon the importance of looking at the past while still moving forward. Gibson's legacy dates back to the 1890's when Orville Gibson invented his first instrument. Currently, Gibson already has widespread appeal with their famous logo but the Hummingbird Collection takes this branding to a new level.

Later, Cesar Gueikian - Gibson Brand President gave a quick history lesson as he pointed out the two vintage Hummingbird guitars with their distinctive pickguards that were on each side of the stage. He concluded with the idea that the Hummingbird's history is being seen though a modern lens. Billy Reid also spoke briefly to attendees sharing how impressed he was by Gibson on all levels - their kindness, their commitment to Nashville as well as their commitment to made-in the USA quality.

Billy, who is an accomplished guitar player, researched the various incarnations of the signature Hummingbird pickguard artwork and worked with the Gibson team to create an original design, which he calls the "Kissing Hummingbirds." The Billy Reid x Gibson Collection is comprised of men's and women's ready-to-wear clothes and guitar accessories. For men there is a leather café racer jacket, western style shirting, sweater, sweatshirt and a t-shirt. The women's line includes a Hummingbird midi-dress, cardigan, bandana tunic dress, and a women's mohair winter coat that will be coming this fall.

Gibson events often include music and Thursday's special guest was Margo Price. At one time, Margo was a well-respected local artist but her first solo album Midwest Farmers' Daughter brought her to the attention of the world. The record debuted in the Top 10 on Billboard's Country Albums chart and since then Price has continued to build on her success.

Margo wearing a Billy Reid design opened with "Tennessee Song" followed by the event appropriate "American Made". Next, "De Colores" was a traditional folk song sung in Spanish that Price said was "about loving all people" providing a much needed sentiment in these current times. For her last number, Price put down the guitar and picked up a tambourine to sing "Mercedes Benz" which showcased her unique vocal talents.

"Music culture has always been synonymous with individual style and authentic expression," said Curleigh. "Our Gibson artists Margo Price, Abraham Alexander, and Aaron Lee Tasjan naturally embody the timeless and edgy aesthetic of the new Hummingbird Collection. The opportunity to combine the iconic Gibson Hummingbird vibe into lifestyle collaboration with Billy Reid is exciting for us. But, even more exciting for our fans." The Billy Reid x Gibson Hummingbird Collection retails from $68 to $1,498 and will be sold at select Billy Reid retail stores and at the Gibson Garage in Nashville as well as online.
