Rex and Roy Express Themselves in Brentwood

by Rich and Laura Lynch

The Rex and Roy Bands each presented an expressive and energized set of music at Expression City on Saturday, March 05, 2022 in Brentwood, Tennessee. Rex backed by a full band kicked off the event. His concert was a combination of covers and material from his new record.

Rex Paul Schnelle opens for the Roy Band at Expression City.

Rex Paul Schnelle is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and record producer. Rex began his professional career in the late 1970's with the group Next Exit. During the 1980's, while living in Texas he played in a number of bands honing his chops. Over the years, RPS has become a highly sought out producer who has worked on over 2000 demos for up and coming artists. He has performed with plenty of A-listers too, such as Blake Shelton, Jon-Bon Jovi, Vince Gill and many more. Rex is also a well-respected solo act. His latest album All I Want Is You includes esteemed guests Eric Johnson, Phil Keaggy, Mark Douthit, plus an additional track with Dann Huff.

Highlights from Rex's latest included, "Dancing With The Pain" a relatable piece that rocked a bit despite the subject matter showcasing Rex's fine song craft as did the title track and the deep "Time Stood Still". "Anthem" paid homage to Leonard Cohen before RPS mentioned being a big Sting fan. He tipped his hat to the Police frontman with a timely and compelling cover of "Shape of My Heart" followed by Eric Johnson's "Cliffs of Dover" that allowed Rex to show off his guitar skills as he closed the set on a soaring note.

"All I Want Is You" is the new album from Rex Paul Schnelle.

Between acts, there was 80's trivia that included giveaways. The set change did not take long as some of the folks who performed with Rex are also members of The Roy Band. This Nashville 80's tribute band presented a diverse repertoire of glam, pop and rock from the decade of leg warmers and neon clothes.

Fans were encouraged to dance and sing along. Many did as The Roy Band powered through hits such as "Authority Song", "Refugee", "Jessie's Girl" and a sassy "Stray Cat Strut". Roy asked if folks recalled roller skating rinks. There were some nods as a disco ball was switched on so that people could slowly sway to INSX's "Never Tear Us Apart" in spinning lights.

Roy of the Roy Band plays at the Roy E. Barberi Theatre in Brentwood.

Singer Amanda Shields who is an aerial sling student at the Nashville Circus Center came out to handle "Shadows of the Night" by the high octane vocalist Pat Benatar. The fun continued with REO's "Take It On The Run", "867-5309" and ended with more classics from the Reagan era. As of this writing, The Roy Band is scheduled to play at Expression City the first Saturday of each month - so come on down to go back to sometime in the 1980s!

Expression City's Roy E. Barberi Theatre is located at 1724 General George Patton Drive, Brentwood, Tennessee. Expression City is home to the Roy E. Barberi Theatre - an intimate and inviting venue that is available for concerts, fundraisers, parties and more. Light refreshments and some adult beverages were provided for purchase on Saturday night. In addition, Expression City hosts academic camps that focus on acting, circus, music and theater.
