Dave Isaacs: Nashville Guitar Guru Gives Up and Comers a Big Boost in Music City

by Rich and Laura Lynch

Nashville, Tennessee is a town that on any given night there could be two dozen of the next Chris Stapletons playing for tips in the honky tonks on Broadway. The music that echoes from the establishments on SoBro is usually high quality and just that good. There's also a countless number of weekly songwriter rounds that take place in and around the city on an ongoing basis featuring Music Row's best songwriters and top upcoming talent.

So, what are you supposed to do if you are an aspiring musician in Music City just looking to get your feet wet as far as performing live is concerned? Well, one man now has the answer and a powerful solution to that problem.

Meet Dave Isaacs - the "Nashville Guitar Guru". Dave has become well known in Mid-Tenn as a performer, artist, teacher - and now, a music industry mentor. We first got to know Isaacs several years back when he lived on Long Island and fronted a country rock outfit known as Jackalope Junction. No sooner did he move to the Capitol of Country Music that he began putting rock bands together. Funny how that happens.

We finally got to meet Dave in person Monday, April 09, 2018 when he hosted his regularly scheduled performance workshop at InDo Nashville. In a cool room located just behind the City Winery, across from Music City Center and in the shadow of the Batman Building relative newcomers are invited to play and sing onstage in a comfortable, relaxed, and supportive environment. Dave adds, "this is a beginner's stage, experience is not required!" The only requirement is that you play your own instrument. The team at MCN thinks that this is a wonderful and rare opportunity for real-word experience in a town that can be somewhat jaded as far as music is concerned.

First up was MCN team member Rich Lynch who - bathed in purple light - got the night rolling with a double shot of his songs "Ode to the Chemtrail Pilots" and "All Rights Reversed". As for the other acts one thing that united most of them was perhaps a slight hint of nervousness and hesitancy. But, even here on a Monday night the quality of the original songs and co-writes that were offered by the aspiring artists was quite good. For instance, take "Pain of Glass" by Russ Lacasse. This serious number about self-reflection was strong and revealing and a high-point of the 90 minute showcase.

We found Dave to be a warm and kind individual who actually seemed to still be learning from his students and this group of newbies in Nashville. He had to reprimand himself as he searched his mind for lyrics while tuning his guitar during a funny moment that led into his two song set. He finished with what he called the most oblique track he's written in Nashville named "Dodo and Crow". Like the song it's likely that of all of Dave's students some will take flight while others will remain grounded. But, he's pushing them out of the nest one way or the other.
